Mind Control and Torture Today

To begin this post I need to preface it with a little bit of background from my earlier posts and essays. My topic being discussed is Project MKUltra. Project MK Ultra 'was' a government experiment for mind control and torture that happened from 1955-1975, or did it. I have come to the realization through my research that it did not stop there. The government may have said that it stopped but they never produced the evidence supporting this claim. Much of the work that went into MK Ultra is missing. It was burned during the infamous Watergate scandal to attempt to get rid of all evidence but come survived and now we as citizens can see the dark mark in our country's history.

Project MK Ultra was an attempt to find the perfect truth serum and potential mind control techniques. obviously, they didn't find exactly what the were looking for. Though LSD seemed to be good in making people a little more willing to talk it had serious side effects as shown in the case of Dr. Frank Olsen. He was part of a group of FBI agents that the government had to decide to test on. After learning of Project MK Ultra Frank wanted out. He told his family he was going to quit but before he got the opportunity he "committed suicide". The reason that I put that in quotations is that it is likely untrue. The ME put that as the cause of death but in more recent years with new technology, we took a closer look. It appeared that he was dead before he fell from the building meaning he was in fact murdered.

Project MK Ultra had lies hidden in it from the beginning. In fact, saying it started in 1955 is lying. The origins of MK Ultra trace back to Operation Paperclip that started in 1945 when the CIA illegally brought Nazi scientists to the US to work for them and help with torture and interrogation ("July..."). They later began using LSD on unsuspecting subjects, anywhere from agents to men at whore houses to an entire town in France. There was no stopping the test, so why did they stop? Simple, they took it too far and people started dying. Why? One of the biggest contributors to the death toll would have to be the doctor working in Canada for the US. He was doing all of his work at a university on people with minor issues such as minor anxiety, depression, and a few schizophrenics. His techniques were far beyond LSD, he also would inject his patients with muscle relaxants and then stimulants that would make them jolt or spaz. He went on to putting them into a coma and having a recording going to "reprogram" them. He believed he could completely alter who they were. As far as actual mind control goes I'm not sure if it is the best way. These patients left with far more problems then with what they came. Many wound up in mental institutions where they were tortured and neglected, others committed suicide because of the major side effects. The torture didn't stop there.

Many things learned from MK Ultra were later used on prisoners of war in places such as Guantanamo Bay into the early 2000's. Some techniques that were favorable were things such as waterboarding (practically drowning people), electric shock therapy (common in MK Ultra). Something truly shocking was as stated in Bodies of Evidence "The "torture memos" gave specific approval for a dozen or so techniques that Mitchell and Jessen had so far outlined, from waterboarding to solitary confinement, before claiming that "cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment" did not constitute torture as long as there was no "specific intent to cause severe pain". The only mooted techniques at which the department drew the line were mock execution and burial"(Bodies of evidence). Meaning that they could do just about anything to the prisoners to make them talk just like in the case of MK Ultra. It is not over. More shocking evidence begins to unfold with documents released to the public. What else did they do?

  1. Blog analysis:
    -Context of the argument
    *Who is the author?
    Katelyn Tunquist
    *Who is the Audience?
The uninformed about Project MKUltra and mind control.
    *What is the purpose?
To inform the audience about project MKUltra and its continuation or lack thereof.
    *What are the sources?
Reputable documents from CIA and others involved.

    -Approach/Style
    Informative essay.

    -Authors tone
Feels strongly about the issue but has a strong undertone that it is real and they (Katelyn) strongly believe.

    -Persuasive appeal
The strongest persuasive appeal is that the CIA preformed experiments on individuals through LSD in order to try and control their minds. The author uses strong vocabulary such as "lies" and "lying" to persuade the audience that MKUltra has happened and is still possibly in affect.
